PROFILE DESCRIPTIONS

Academic Chronology

Omar Ahsan Fahim obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) in June 2022. His undergraduate thesis focused on examining noise pollution and the socio-economic impacts of shallow engine vehicles in the Kushtia region.

Professional Track Record

Since March 2024, Omar Ahsan Fahim has been serving as a Junior Engineer in the Climate Change and Environment Unit of the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM). In this capacity, he has contributed to research and applied work in climate change, hydrology, hydrodynamics, and survey operations. His responsibilities include conducting social surveys through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and Key Informant Interviews (KII), measuring heat stress under varying conditions using Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) indices, supervising meteorological data collection, and supporting environmental and social impact monitoring. He has also undertaken advanced climate data analyses, particularly in the assessment and forecasting of Urban Heat Island (UHI) effects through the integration of satellite-based observations and ground-level measurements, along with providing input for technical reports.

Prior to this role, he worked in IWM’s Survey & Data Division, where he developed extensive expertise in field-based hydrographic and topographic data collection. His work encompassed establishing survey benchmarks, installing water-level gauges and TD divers, and conducting bathymetric surveys using both multibeam and single-beam echo-sounders. He also performed velocity and discharge measurements with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) at strategic locations across the Meghna, Tentulia, and Jamuna rivers. In addition, he contributed to long-term river monitoring initiatives, including scour depth assessments at bridge piers, monthly hydrographic monitoring near the Bangabandhu Bridge, full river surveys of approximately 30 km of the Jamuna River, and 60 km of bankline surveys. His responsibilities further included water-level monitoring, contour spot generation, hydrographic data processing, and assisting in the preparation of technical reports.
