Academic Chronology
Md. Monirul Islam completed his Masters of Engineering in Water Resources Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh in 2011, with great distinction in his dissertation entitled “Technical Feasibility of Sediment Management Options of Beel Baruna in Jessore Area.” He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) in 1998.
Professional Track Record
Md. Monirul Islam is a Senior Specialist at the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM), with over 26 years of professional experience in the field of hydrology, hydrogeology, and water resources planning and management. Since joining IWM in 2011, he has been actively involved in hydrological investigations, groundwater–surface water interaction modelling, and integrated water resources assessments across Bangladesh and abroad.
He has contributed to numerous national and international projects as Team Leader, Project Leader, Water Resources Planning and Design Specialist, and Surface Water-Groundwater Interaction Modeller, providing leadership in hydrological data processing, model development, model calibration, validation and climate-resilient water management. His work has been instrumental in identifying Water Stress Areas (WSA), determining safe yield levels, and improving the understanding of aquifer systems in regions such as the High Barind, North-Central, and Haor areas.
His experience also includes technical training and capacity building for organizations such as BWDB, BADC, WARPO, BMDA, DPHE, and NAHRIM (Malaysia). He has extensive expertise in numerical modelling tools such as MIKE SHE, MIKE 11, MODFLOW, and FEFLOW, and has made significant contributions to developing sustainable water management frameworks under changing climatic conditions.
