Mr. Md. Taneem Sarwar, Senior Specialist and Head Design Unit at the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM), has been serving the organization since January 2012. He has over 20 years of professional experience in planning, analysis, modelling, and design of water resources infrastructure. His expertise spans hydrology, hydraulic and structural engineering, river training, navigation infrastructure, climate-resilient development, and geotechnical engineering. Throughout his career, he has successfully led and contributed to multidisciplinary projects for national and international clients, delivering sustainable engineering solutions for flood management, river engineering, inland water transport, and climate adaptation.

In 2017, he obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Water Resources Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), specializing in hydraulic structures, river engineering, hydrological and hydraulic modelling, flood risk management, coastal engineering, and integrated water resources management.

In 2005, he completed a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Civil Engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), building a strong foundation in structural, geotechnical, transportation, environmental, and water resources engineering.

Training/Membership/Workshop/Seminar/Publication etc.

Mr. Md. Taneem Sarwar is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (FIEB) and an enlisted Structural Engineer of RAJUK.

Md. Taneem Sarwar has continuously strengthened his professional expertise through advanced national and international training programmes. In 2024, he completed Project Management for Engineers at the Engineering Staff College, Bangladesh, enhancing his skills in project planning, implementation, contract administration, and engineering management. In 2022, he participated in the Joint Cooperation Programme (JCP) in Delft, The Netherlands, where he received advanced technical training and engaged in collaborative working sessions on hydraulic modelling, climate resilience, and integrated water resources management.

In 2021, he completed the Training of Trainers (ToT-1) organized by Deltares Academy under the Bangladesh–Netherlands Joint Cooperation Programme, alongside specialized training on Polder Water Management at the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM). During the same period, he successfully completed the Business Communication Skills programme conducted by the British Council, focusing on professional communication, technical presentations, and stakeholder engagement. Earlier, in 2019, he participated in the Joint Workshop on Modelling for Polder Management, jointly organized by IWFM, BUET and WMKIP, strengthening his expertise in hydrodynamic modelling and integrated polder management.

In 2019, he co-authored the peer-reviewed journal article titled "Assessment of Water Logging and Planning of Drainage Improvement Measures Using Mathematical Modelling Tools for Selected Coastal Polder of Bangladesh," published in the IOSR Journal of Mechanical and Civil Engineering (IOSR-JMCE). The publication presents the application of mathematical modelling techniques to evaluate waterlogging conditions and develop sustainable drainage improvement strategies for coastal polders in Bangladesh.

Professional Track Record

With more than 20 years of multidisciplinary engineering experience, Md. Taneem Sarwar has successfully planned, designed, and supervised a wide range of water resources, hydraulic, civil, and structural engineering projects across Bangladesh. His expertise spans the complete project cycle—from feasibility studies, hydrological and hydraulic assessments, numerical modelling, and detailed engineering design to construction support and technical review.

At the Institute of Water Modelling (IWM), as head of Design unit, he has led the planning and detailed design of complex hydraulic infrastructure, including regulators, sluices, irrigation and drainage structures, embankments, river training works, bank protection systems, dredging channels, and flood management interventions. He has played a key role in establishing design criteria, guiding hydraulic and hydrodynamic modelling teams, developing design parameters, conducting slope stability and scour analyses, reviewing geotechnical investigations, and preparing engineering drawings, technical specifications, BOQs, and feasibility reports in accordance with national and international design standards.

His experience also includes the development of climate-resilient water management solutions, river restoration measures, navigation improvement projects, drainage and flood mitigation strategies, shoreline protection, and integrated riverfront development. He has contributed extensively to the review and modernization of engineering guidelines, design manuals, and technical standards for major government agencies, while providing technical leadership for multidisciplinary project teams.

Prior to joining IWM, he served as a Senior Structural Engineer, where he was responsible for the analysis and design of complex industrial, commercial, and infrastructure projects. His work included three-dimensional structural modelling, finite element analysis, steel and reinforced concrete design, shallow and deep foundation systems, dynamic and static structural analysis, connection design, preparation of detailed calculation reports, and production of construction and fabrication drawings for industrial facilities and process plants.

Earlier in his career, as a Project Engineer and Structural Engineer, he successfully designed and supervised numerous residential and commercial buildings, ensuring compliance with engineering codes, construction specifications, quality standards, project schedules, and cost objectives. His experience encompasses reinforced concrete and steel structures, foundation engineering, project implementation, construction supervision, and technical coordination throughout all phases of project delivery.

Throughout his career, he has established a strong reputation for delivering innovative, technically sound, and sustainable engineering solutions in the fields of water resources engineering, river engineering, hydraulic structures, climate-resilient infrastructure, structural engineering, navigation development, flood risk management, and integrated infrastructure planning. His combination of engineering design expertise, numerical modelling, project management, and multidisciplinary coordination enables him to successfully deliver complex engineering projects from concept through implementation. Extensive experience delivering multidisciplinary consultancy services for BIWTA, BWDB, LGED, RHD, BADC, USAID, CDDL, World Bank, ADB, and other national and international development partners, covering hydrological and hydraulic modelling, river training, flood management, coastal engineering, navigation improvement, infrastructure planning, and detailed engineering design.
